Owning a Cane Corso carries a great deal of responsibility and commitment because of their size, strength and protectiveness. Guidelines for buying a Cane Corso: Your first consideration when buying a Cane Corso should be the knowledge that for the next ten or more years, that dog will be part of your household. The Cane Corso is sensitive animal and will reflect the love and affection that you show him. Your dog will represent not only a financial investment but also an emotional investment. Therefore, choose him carefully. I urge you to know as much as possible about the breed before you buy. Some Questions You May Have About the Cane Corso: How much do Cane Corsi eat? A Cane Corso will not eat you out of house and home. The amount of food a Cane Corso eats depends upon the size, age, sex and activity level of your dog. Generally they will eat between 5 and 10 pounds of quality kibble a week. That would generally be between 4 and 8 cups of kibble divided into two feedings each day. High quality kibble costs between $30-$40 for a 40 pound bag. How big are they? Males range from 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 100-125 pounds. Females range from 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 85-105 pounds. Cane Corsi can be found that are larger or smaller than the sizes given, however they are not considered typical by the breed standard. What color are they? The Cane Corso comes in a variety of different colors. They consist of Black, Plumb-Grey, Slate, Light Grey, Light Fawn, Deer Fawn, Dark Fawn and Tubby. What is their temperament like? Cane Corsi are calm and alert companions. They often follow their masters around house keeping a constant and sometimes obtrusive watch over their loved ones. They are intelligent, level-headed and brave making them an outstanding watchdog. They are very loving with children and with their family. Are they easy to train? Yes! The Cane Corso has tremendous size and strength therefore the Cane Corso must be trained early in life. They are intelligent working dogs and begin responding to commands as soon as they understand what you want of them. They are very sensitive to your needs and they want to please you. The size and bark of the Cane Corso will discourage most intruders, yet he will learn to recognize your friends and receive them cordially. This is a matter of personal preference. The male is larger and more impressive when first seen. The female, however, should be considered as equal in all other aspects. How do they handle heat and cold? Cane Corsi can tolerate cool temperatures better than hot temperatures. They should never be left outside in direct sunlight. Heat stroke comes on very quickly especially if the dog is black in color. Dogs must have shelter regardless where you live.
